Chinook - The Chinook is one of the most easily identified helicopters in the world. A tandem-rotor design, this large twin-engined medium-lift helicopter normally operates with a crew of four. The Chinook can carry up to 45 fully equipped troops or up to 10 tonnes of equipment either internally or underslung. The Chinook fleet has recently undergone a mid-life update, and all aircraft are now designated HC2. Chinook

Puma Puma - The Puma is a tactical transport helicopter which entered RAF service in 1972. It can carry up to 16 fully equipped troops or 5,500 lbs of freight. Like the Chinook, the Puma is equipped with night vision aids, defensive electronic countermeasures and advanced navigation aids.

Dominie - The Dominie is a military version of the BAe125. The T1 variant entered service in 1965 and is currently used by No3 Flying Trainng School at RAF Cranwell to provide basic training for Navigators, Flight Engineers and Air Electronic Operators. The Dominie can operate at low, medium and high altitudes and differs from the BAe125 in that it is powered by Viper 520 turbo jets as opposed to Garret Turbofans.

Sea King Sea King - The Sea King HAR3s of the RAF operate in the Search & Rescue (SAR) role in the UK and in the Falkland Islands. The aircraft is fitted with a computer to assist positioning in the hover and carries advanced all-weather search and navigation equipment. When hovering, the Sea King can be 'flown' by the winch operator, who can position the rescue harness with great accuracy. The Sea King can carry up to 18 passengers and has a radius of action of 280 miles.

Squirrel - The Single Squirrel is a single-engine light training helicopter which entered service in April 1997 as a replacement for the Gazelle. It is used as a basic trainer to prepare pilots for the complexities of twin-engine helicopter training and operational flying. The HT1 variant is operated by the Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) at RAF Shawbury whilst the HT2 model is used by the DHFS at Middle Wallop for training Army Air Corps pilots. The Twin Squirrel (pictured), a twin-engined variant, is operated by No 32 (The Royal) Squadron.

Firefly Firefly - The Slingsby Firefly M260 is a conventional low-wing, two-seat elementary training aircraft with a fixed tricycle undercarriage operated by the Joint Elementary Training School (JEFTS) at RAF Barkston Heath. The JEFTS is a civilian unit on contract to the MOD and employs civilian and military instructors to train pilots for all three services.

Hawk - The Hawk entered service in 1976. The Hawk T1 is a two-seat, jet-engined trainer used for advanced flying training at RAF Valley. The aircraft is also used to provide an introduction to operational tactics and airborne weapons delivery. The T1A is a modified version of the Hawk capable of carrying Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. Armed additionally with a ventral 30mm cannon, the 72 T1As would supplement the Tornado F3 air defence force in times of tension or war. The Hawk is used operationally by No 100 Squadron in the target facilities role and, as is well known, equips the RAF Aerobatic Team, the 'Red Arrows'. Hawk

Tucano Tucano - The Shorts Tucano T1 is the RAF's basic flying trainer and is powered by a Garret TPE331 turbo-prop engine. The Tucano replaced the venerable Jet Provost in RAF service and is used to prepare student pilots for progression to the Hawk T1 advanced flying trainer.
